Amethyst Chamber Ensemble presents: “In a Soprano Hue”

A fresh take on the art song recital, In a Soprano Hue offers art song through a new lens. From the rarely performed Vier letzte Lieder (Four Last Songs) of Richard Strauss, through music of Rodrigo, Fauré, Bernstein, and living American composers Rosephanye Powell, Dan Sonenberg (Portland premiere), and Steven Finch, we explore art song through the unique vocal colors and artistic gifts of the singers in our ensemble.

The human voice, more than any other instrument, has a wide variety of color, character, depth, and feeling, that is unique to each singer. This is true within the soprano or mezzo soprano instrument, as well as among the individual singers of each type. In this performance, we celebrate the unique gifts of each vocal artist, all together in one afternoon of music.

From “sets” that were not intended by the composer (such as the Four Last Songs), to more traditional sets, we collaborate to illuminate this beautiful material in a new way. Rodrigo’s Cuatro Madrigales Amatorios, and Powell’s Miss Wheatley’s Garden, along with duets and trios, combine and recombine the colors of the human voice to bring new life to the traditional art song recital.

Amethyst Chamber Ensemble celebrates the astonishing depth and versatility of talent among the singers who are here, living and working in Maine. Join us as we share that talent in this gorgeous and fun program:
